Leonardo's famous "Vitruvian Man" drawing is named as such because it is based on the work of ancient Roman architect Vitruvius, who spoke of ideal human proportions and geometry and such. The drawing is an ideal example not only of Leonardo's interest in proportions, but also of the blending of art and science of the Renaissance as a whole.

Modern scientists, in close examination of the drawing, have determined that the subject appears to suffer from a left-sided inguinal hernia.
